Sundial Background Information

The sundial is the oldest known device for measuring time. The concept of the sundial is based on the fact that the shadow of an object will move from one side to the other as the sun moves from East to West during the course of the day. Sundials are thought to have been used as early as 2000BC.

The sundial consists of the plane (dial face) and the gnomon (style). The dial face is usually divided into 12 equal segments i.e. hours and then sometimes divided into half hours and quarter hours. The gnomon is a flat piece of metal set in the centre of the dial. This points towards the North pole in the Northern Hemisphere and towards the south pole in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sundial Pedestal

Using box heart oak, (centre of the tree) we encompass the strength required and the cracking and the chequing that gives the traditional look. Due to it's size we mount the solid brass dial onto a stone top.

Once the bird bath is stood outside the wood will go through a change in colour to the traditional silvery grey that oak is known for. During this process 'Tannic Acid' which is effectively the tree sap will come out of the wood. For this reason we suggest that the sundial is not stood on an area that needs to be kept from any staining, as this tannic acid can leave a brown stain. We suggest that the bird bath is stood on another slab.

We also offer a bracket mounting system to give permanent fixing if knocking the feature over may be a concern, or theft is an issue.

The Sundial Top.

The Sundial top is designed and made in two components. The brass sundial used is shown in the 'Dials Only' page, under 'Sundials'. The Dial used for this particular sundial is the '4 Way Sundial' The size of the stone varies depending on what nature deals us.
